Trump reveals surprising new tariffs on Brazil that might disrupt your morning habits

Trump Imposes Shocking 50% Tariff on Brazil — Here’s How It Could Affect Your Morning Routine

US President Donald Trump announced a massive 50% import tariff on Brazil, effective August 1, 2025. This move partly responds to Brazil’s treatment of Trump’s ally and former president, Jair Bolsonaro. The tariff could significantly impact everyday American habits — including your morning coffee.

Brazil Faces New 50% Tariffs Starting August 1

Brazil previously enjoyed a trade surplus with the US and exemption from many tariffs. However, Trump revealed on July 9 that Brazil will now face a 50% levy on all imports into the United States.

Trump shared a letter addressed to Brazil’s current president, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, explaining the tariff decision. The letter appeared on Trump’s social media platform, Truth Social.

Bolsonaro’s Trial Fuels Tensions

Trump criticized Brazil’s handling of Jair Bolsonaro, calling him a “strong leader” who “truly loved his country.” He described Bolsonaro’s ongoing trial for allegedly attempting a coup as a “witch hunt” and an “international disgrace.”

“The way Brazil has treated former President Bolsonaro… should not be taking place,” Trump wrote. He accused Brazil’s government of censoring U.S. social media and attacking free elections and speech rights.

How Tariffs Could Disrupt Your Morning

Brazil supplies roughly one-third of the coffee consumed in the US. Industry groups estimate Brazil exports about eight million bags of coffee annually to America.

The tariff hike may drive up coffee prices, affecting your morning cup of joe. Additionally, Brazil provides more than half of the orange juice sold in the US, which could also become more expensive.

Trump Cites Unfair Trade Relationship

Trump’s letter argued the US has long tolerated unfair trade policies from Brazil. “We must move away from the longstanding, and very unfair trade relationship engendered by Brazil’s tariff and non-tariff policies,” he stated. He added that the trade relationship has been “far from reciprocal.”

Brazil Pushes Back Strongly

Brazil’s President Lula responded firmly on Twitter, asserting Brazil’s sovereignty and independence. “The judicial proceedings… fall exclusively under the jurisdiction of Brazil’s Judicial Branch,” Lula wrote. “They are not subject to interference or threats.”

Brazilian Minister Gleisi Hoffmann also criticized Trump, saying, “The time when Brazil was subservient to the US was the time of Bolsonaro.” She urged Trump to “respect the sovereignty of Brazil and our judiciary.”

Part of a Global Tariff Campaign

Trump first announced plans to impose “reciprocal” tariffs on various countries on April 2, during a White House Rose Garden address dubbed “Liberation Day.” Countries like the UK were initially hit with a 10% import tariff.

Recently, letters informed countries about their new tariff rates starting August 1, unless they negotiate new trade deals.

What This Means for You

The new 50% tariffs on Brazilian goods could raise prices for everyday items like coffee and orange juice. As the trade battle unfolds, Americans may feel the financial effects in their daily routines.
