Teen Who Worked Burger King Shift In Graduation Gown Receives $130k In Donations

Mykale Baker, 18, had different plans while the majority of high school graduates were out having fun with friends and family. His diligence has paid off!

Baker, still sporting his graduation stole and medals, worked at his neighbourhood Burger King just hours after graduating from Mills Creek High School in Georgia.

Maria Mendoza, a fellow graduate mother, took a picture of the occasion, which soon went viral and transformed Baker’s life.

“Determination Looks Like This”

According to the New York Post, Mendoza, who had recently witnessed her own daughter graduate from the same high school, observed the teenager behind the drive-thru window at around 10:00 PM on May 21.

“While many graduates spent the night celebrating with friends and family, one young man quietly showed the world what determination looks like,” Mendoza wrote on GoFundMe.

Inspired by Baker’s calm commitment and “radiating joy,” Mendoza captured the moment on camera and posted a 20-second TikTok video, which as of this writing has received over 3.9 million views.

“He didn’t do it for attention. He doesn’t even know his story went viral. But thousands of people were moved by his dedication, humility, and work ethic,” she added.

Viral Video Sparks a Community Movement

Mendoza was inspired rather than merely impressed. She started a GoFundMe campaign to help Baker pursue her college goals after seeing the video, and the response was tremendous.

As of Saturday morning (May 31), the fundraising has raised over $115,000, having raised $22,000 in a matter of days. The goal of the campaign is to pay for Baker’s tuition, books, materials, and any other educational requirements.

“Let’s get together as a community and support this young kid,” the fundraiser reads. “Let’s show him that the world is watching — and rooting for him.”

One kind donator wrote, “Congratulations, Mykale, on your graduation! Your dedication and positive spirit are truly inspiring.”

Another added, “Congratulations, Mykale!!! Continue to be GREAT at any and everything you set your mind to!!”

“You’re an inspiration without knowing it. Keep true to your values and follow your dreams. Congratulations on graduation and God Bless you on your future,” typed a third.

From Uncertainty to Opportunity

Unaware of his growing notoriety, Mendoza returned to the Burger King on May 26 to show Baker how much money had been raised, and he broke down in tears. In a subsequent TikTok, he thanked Mendoza and his tearful mother and gave them both hugs.

“Thank you so much, I was thinking of taking a gap year because I didn’t have money for school, but thank you to all of you now, I might actually go straight to technical college and get my mechanical (sic),” Baker said in the video.

“I never thought this would happen to me, I’m very thankful,” he added.

A Life-Changing Moment

The teenager now has a clear route ahead of him after considering postponing his college ambitions because of financial difficulties.

“I always watched people on YouTube receive cool surprises, but I never thought it would happen to me,” Baker admitted.

Mendoza, reflecting on the experience, told 11 Alive“His dedication and quiet strength really moved me. I felt called to do something to recognize that. I’m just grateful I got to do something for him.”

Mykale, congratulations!
