Kamala Harris Condemns Trump’s Use of National Guard in Los Angeles Riots

Former Vice President Kamala Harris has drawn sharp criticism after speaking out against President Donald Trump’s decision to deploy National Guard troops to help quell escalating violence in Los Angeles tied to immigration enforcement protests.

Over the weekend, clashes erupted across parts of downtown Los Angeles as demonstrators aimed to obstruct ongoing ICE operations. Federal agents and law enforcement vehicles were targeted, and several shops were looted or set on fire. Despite the mounting chaos, California Governor Gavin Newsom and Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass declined to call for state-level intervention.

In response, President Trump federalized approximately 2,000 California National Guard troops to restore order, with an additional 500 Marines on standby at Camp Pendleton. The move was met with immediate opposition from Harris.

Harris: “A Dangerous Escalation”

Harris, who is widely considered a top contender for California’s 2026 gubernatorial race, issued a statement blasting the federal response:

“Los Angeles is my home. And like so many Americans, I am appalled at what we are witnessing on the streets of our city,” Harris said. “Deploying the National Guard is a dangerous escalation meant to provoke chaos.”

She characterized the immigration raids and troop presence as part of a broader agenda:

“These actions are not about public safety — they’re about spreading fear, division, and panic across communities,” Harris continued, while referring to the demonstrations as “mostly peaceful.”

Critics Fire Back

Despite Harris’s comments, several Republican officials condemned her response, pointing to widespread violence and destruction as justification for the National Guard’s involvement.

Riverside County Sheriff Chad Bianco, a 2026 GOP gubernatorial hopeful, accused Harris and other Democrats of downplaying the unrest. In a viral post on X (formerly Twitter), Bianco wrote:

“Gavin Newsom, Kamala Harris, Karen Bass and the Democrats want you to think this is a ‘peaceful protest.’ Don’t let them gaslight you. This is Gavin’s Lawless California. Our state deserves better.”

His post included a video showing a vehicle engulfed in flames and protesters clashing with officers on the streets.

A State in Crisis

As tensions over immigration enforcement and federal authority continue to grow, California remains in the national spotlight. With political stakes rising ahead of the 2026 elections, the state’s response to public unrest — and the candidates’ reactions to it — could shape the future of its leadership.
