Jack Schlossberg is calling out House Republicans for pushing to rename the Kennedy Center Opera House after Melania Trump. He also took a sh0t at Donald Trump in the process.
The proposal was led by Rep Mike Simpson and could be voted on later this fall. Schlossberg responded with a long message on Instagram.
Quoting his grandfather, he wrote: “A nation reveals itself not only by the men it produces — but also by the men it honors, the men it remembers.
“JFK believed the arts made our country great and could be our most effective weapon in the fight for civil rights and against authoritarian governments around the world.
“The Trump Administration stands for freedom of oppression, not expression. He uses his awesome powers to suppress free expression and instill fear. But this isn’t about the arts.
“Trump is obsessed with being bigger than JFK, with minimizing the many heroes of our past, as if that elevates him. It doesn’t.
“But there’s hope — art lasts forever, and no one can change what JFK and our shared history stands for.”
The House Appropriations Committee approved an amendment on July 22 to rename the Opera House at the Kennedy Center the “First Lady Melania Trump Opera House.”
That came after Trump criticized the center for being too “woke” and replaced the board earlier this year. He named himself the new chair. Schlossberg said the renaming wasn’t really about the arts. He believed it was something else entirely.
In a statement, Simpson said: “First Lady Melania Trump serves as the Honorary Chair of the Board of Trustees at the Kennedy Center. Naming a theater after her is an excellent way to recognize her appreciation for the arts.”
There was no confirmation on whether the name change was coordinated with the White House or the Kennedy Center itself.
Online, most people backed Schlossberg. Comments on his post included things like “Surely this can’t be allowed to happen” and “What has she done to have that honor taken from President Kennedy?”
