Ellen DeGeneres Says Donald Trump Is The Reason She Permanently Moved to England: ‘Everything Here Is Just Better’

Ellen DeGeneres has officially embraced her new life in the United Kingdom, where she now lives full-time with her wife, actress Portia de Rossi. The talk show host recently opened up about the decision to settle in the UK permanently—sharing how the move was shaped by a desire for peace, acceptance, and a new beginning.

The couple now resides in the scenic Cotswolds region of England, known for its quiet countryside, stone cottages, and celebrity residents. DeGeneres, 67, often shares peaceful clips of her new surroundings, including the local sheep that wander near her rural estate and the tranquil landscape she now calls home.

A Decision Inspired by Change

Speaking at the Everyman Theatre in Cheltenham, DeGeneres reflected on her move overseas. “We arrived the day before the election,” she said, referring to the 2024 U.S. presidential election. “We woke up to messages from friends and realized things had shifted. We looked at each other and said, ‘We’re staying.’”

Although the property was originally intended as a part-time getaway, the shift became permanent. When asked directly if the political climate influenced their decision to stay, she replied simply, “Yes.” A representative for the theatre later confirmed the comment.

“Everything here just feels more peaceful,” DeGeneres added. “I wish we lived in a world where everyone could be accepted fully for who they are.”

A Focus on Equality and Personal Values

During her talk, DeGeneres expressed concern about growing debates around marriage rights and equality. While she did not focus on specific policies or parties, she noted that changes in public discourse made her and Portia consider where they felt most supported.

“If anything were to change that might affect our marriage rights, we’d consider having our ceremony here again,” she said.

Her comments come amid ongoing conversations in both the U.S. and UK around personal freedoms and civil rights. Ellen’s story reflects how individuals are making deeply personal decisions in response to broader cultural and social climates.

Reflecting on Her Career

Ellen also addressed the conclusion of her long-running talk show, The Ellen DeGeneres Show, which aired for 19 seasons and earned more than 60 Emmy Awards. She acknowledged the challenges she faced during its final years, including criticism over the show’s workplace culture.

“I’m a direct person—very straightforward,” she said. “Sometimes that comes across as harsh. I’ve learned a lot about how to lead with kindness while still being honest.”

Mark Goucher, CEO of the Everyman Theatre, called DeGeneres’s visit a “privilege,” noting her openness and humor during the event.

A Growing Trend?

Ellen’s move highlights a trend that seems to be growing. Recent data suggests more Americans are considering relocating abroad in search of a different lifestyle. Following the 2024 U.S. election, online searches related to moving overseas saw an uptick. A recent survey indicated that about 17% of respondents would consider relocating within five years, citing various personal and social reasons. Canada remains a top destination.

Still, comparisons between countries can be nuanced. According to the OECD’s Better Life Index, the U.S. ranks 10th globally in overall quality of life, while the UK ranks 14th. Each country offers unique advantages and challenges, from healthcare systems to work-life balance.

A Quiet New Chapter

For Ellen and Portia, the move marks a new chapter focused on simplicity, peace, and authenticity. As Ellen adjusts to her life in the English countryside, she appears more at ease—sharing natural moments, candid reflections, and hope for the future.

Her story serves as a reminder that personal decisions are often shaped by more than geography—they reflect values, priorities, and a desire to find meaning in every season of life.
