My Daughter-in-Law Left Me a $40 Bill After I Babysat

When my daughter-in-law, Lila, asked me to babysit Oliver for the weekend, I gladly agreed. Though we’d never been close, I loved spending time with my grandson. But when I arrived, the house was a mess, the fridge nearly empty, and only five diapers were left. Still, I managed—grocery shopping, cleaning, baking cookies with Oliver, and soaking up every sweet moment.

By Monday, I was exhausted but happy—until I found a handwritten bill from Lila on the counter: $40 for eggs, water, toilet paper, even laundry detergent, with a note: “Please Venmo by Friday.”

I was stunned. So I responded the only way I knew how: with a beautifully itemized invoice of my own.

Grandmother Services, Est. 1993
Raising Your Husband: $203,235
Family discount: –$203,195
Total due: $40

I left it in her mailbox.

The next day, my son called, half-laughing, half-apologetic. “She had it coming,” he said. A week later, Lila sent the $40 with the caption: “To settle my debt. Please don’t charge me interest.” I laughed—and donated it to a children’s hospital in Oliver’s name. Because sometimes, the best comeback is grace wrapped in wit… and a very detailed spreadsheet.
