Unplug This One Thing Every Time It Rains—Or Risk Losing Everything

When a thunderstorm rolls in, the risk isn’t just rain or wind—it’s what it can do to your home’s electrical system. Lightning strikes near power lines can send dangerous surges through your wiring. These sudden jolts can fry computers, TVs, or even appliances in seconds. Surge protectors help, but they’re not foolproof.

That’s why it’s smart to unplug sensitive electronics before the storm hits. TVs, gaming consoles, computers, and phone chargers are common targets. Kitchen items like microwaves and coffee makers, plus smart devices like speakers or routers, are also at risk. Anything plugged in can be damaged in a blink.

Timing matters. Once lightning is overhead, it’s safest to stay away from outlets completely. At that point, unplugging could put you in harm’s way. Plan ahead: if a storm is in the forecast, take a few minutes to unplug early. It’s a small step that can save you big headaches.

For longer-term protection, consider a whole-home surge protector installed by a professional. These systems help shield everything from incoming voltage spikes. Routine electrical inspections also ensure your system is safe and properly grounded. A little prevention can go a long way when nature strikes.
